Energy Efficient Lighting

Covering solar, compact fluorescent, LED, OLED and other energy efficient lighting solutions.

Fluorescent Retrofits

Solar/Wind

  • Kazekamome™ Remote Hybrid System - The RHS is a standalone lighting standard that needs no wiring, no electricity, no underground maintenance and generates its own electricity totally from renewable wind and solar sources, to provide security lighting and freedom from blackouts.

Compact Fluorescent

  • The Light Bulb That Can Change the World - While compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) of the past may have been efficient, but not so effective; but that is changing with recent improvements.  Wal-Mart envisions 110 million American households replacing at least just one ordinary 60-watt incandescent bulb with a CFL, resulting in an energy savings equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the roads. (FastCompany; Sept. 2006) (See Slashdot discussion)

OLED -- Organic Light-Emitting Device

  • Organic lighting research burns bright - The long, challenging technological march from the low-power light bulb Thomas Edison invented to the ultimate in a bright and energy-efficient lighting device may reach fruition in work led by the two ASU researchers. (PhysOrg; Apr. 12, 2007)
  • 100% natural light OLED - Scientist’s at USC have developed a new process for making OLED lighting that gives off a warm natural light that can light up an entire room. They believe this new material could be 100% efficient, giving off no heat and run for years. (PESWiki; Apr. 18, 2006)
  • New materials for high efficiency organic solid state lighting - Direct conversion of electricity to light in "solid state" thin films of organic molecules, occurring in organic light emitting devices (OLED) -- which can be far more efficient than conventional "incandescent" light bulbs -- can be improved further with new charge-transporting organic phosphine oxide molecules. (EurekAlert; Mar. 30, 2006)

LED -- Light-Emitting Diode

  • Lighting > New LED Puts Incandescents, Fluorescents to Shame - Seoul semiconductor has created a light emitting diode that emits roughly 240 lumens and claims the highest efficiency (amount of electricity to amount of light) of any light source. Next objective is to make it cheap enough for the mass market. (Treehugger; Dec. 13, 2006)
  • DOT-it LED light - LED lights take so little juice that they can run on next to nothing. A $10 stick-on light from Sylvania goes anywhere, and lasts up to 100 hours on three AAA batteries. Just press on it and it goes. With a little more thought about sustainability in the design process, affordable and green LED lighting could go mainstream very soon. (TreeHugger; Sept. 29, 2006)
  • Light Waves Concept Introduces 22 Watt LED - "The brightest LED bulb in existence", screws in to all standard Edison bulb bases, has a lifespan of over 5 years and gives off 990 lumens- the equivalent to around 50 or 60 watts in traditional terms. 90% efficient in its energy usage. (BusinessWire; Mar. 22, 2006)
  • Brightest LED puts light bulbs in the shade - Siemens subsidiary Osram has developed the world's brightest white light-emitting diode. At 200 lumens, it competes with conventional lamps. It has an average service life of 50,000 hours and is being prepared for market launch in early 2006. (PhysOrg; June 14, 2005)
  • The Incapacitating Flashlight - Soon cops' flashlights might not only temporarily blind bad guys: they might also stop them in their tracks by disorienting them and making them nauseatingly sick.  The flashlight uses a range finder to measure the distance to the target's eyes so that it can adjust the energy of the light to a level that won't cause permanent damage. (MIT Technology Review; Aug. 6, 2007)

Solar

  • Cool Light on Hot Days: Fiber Optics Bring the Sun Indoors - Piping in sunlight without using electricity is a win-win proposition for the ecosystem and human society. Both home and business customers anticipate energy savings and a more pleasant indoor environment. (PESN; July 27, 2005)
    • New Oak Ridge Company Putting Hybrid Solar Lighting on Map - Sunlight Direct is bursting onto the horizon with demonstration hybrid solar lighting systems (piping sunlight indoors) at the Department of Energy’s American Museum of Science and Energy and several locations across the country. (NewsWise; Aug. 30, 2005)

Conservation

  • DaySwitch™ Adjusts Lighting Per Daylight Availability - The DaySwitch™, developed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, consists of a photosensor that measures daylight levels and sends a signal to the microcontroller that adjusts the power going to the lights. (PESN; April 25, 2006)
DaySwitch
  • Washer-like doohickey makes bulbs last longer - FBI agent founded company, LongLite, which sells a small item which you stick on the base of any incandescent bulb (regular or halogen) to make it last 3x as long, while using 10% less energy and burning just as brightly. (Murcury News; Nov. 28, 2005)

Misc.

  • Will Silicon Light Illuminate the Future? - Group IV Semiconductor is a frontrunner in the race to develop all-silicon solid-state light engines: long-lasting semiconductor devices that generate light up to ten times more efficiently than conventional bulbs and much more economically than today’s LED alternatives. (MIT Technology Review; Oct. 6, 2006)
  • Shining a brighter light - Field emission lamps being developed at UC Davis can match exactly the spectrum of natural daylight, and are up to five times more energy efficient than existing lamps and do not contain environmentally hazardous materials, such as the mercury vapor used in fluorescent tubes.. (PhysOrg; June 14, 2005)
  • ProBright lightstrips transform outdoor lighting - It is the thinnest, longest and brightest electroluminescent lamp in the World. ProBright EL lighting is only 2mm thick and comes in lengths of upto 500'. The flexible lighting uses 1/10 the energy of neon and costs about $115 for a 60' strip. (NewTechSpy; Apr. 5, 2006)
Next Generation Light Source
Scientists at the Institute of Applied Photophysics have been developing highly efficient white organic light-emitting diodes which could perhaps serve as the light sources of the future. (PhysOrg; Nov. 2005)
YES Lights (Yale Equipment & Services, Inc.)
Specializing in Industrial lighting needs.  Offering Energy Efficent lighting to replace HID's in the workplace.  Half the energy cost, twice the light output. (OSEN)
  • Colorado firm develops glow-in-the-dark lamps - Lighting fixtures designed to illuminate during power outages.  By mixing phosphorescent material is mixed with the usual white fluorescent material, American Environmental Products has developed a tube that continues to glow for an hour after being shut off. (MSNBC; Aug. 4, 2005)
  • Can' lights be efficient? - The U.S. Department of Energy is working to improve the efficiency of recessed incandescent lighting through its Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. (EurekAlert; June 15, 2005)

Schopenhauer
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

-- Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860)

    "When you're one step ahead
of the crowd you're a genius.
When you're two steps ahead,
you're a crackpot."

-- Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, (Feb. 1998)
