10,705 MILES PER GALLON
Aug 4 2003

PETROL-FREE CAR OF THE FUTURE

AN eco-friendly car will try to do the equivalent of a trip round the world on just 2.5gallons - of hydrogen.

The car, called the GH2OST, is next week expected to break the world fuel consumption record of 10,705 miles per gallon.

If driver Claudia Woon, 24, succeeds in the bid in Aberdeen, the car would be able to travel 26,000 miles on less than 2.5gallons.

GH2OST, whose waste product is water rather than fumes, weighs just under 16stone and is silent.

It is being heralded by its makers as a replacement for dwindling oil stock.

Scot Kenny Stewart and Dave McGrath, of fuel cell company siGEN, have built the car with the backing of industrial giant BOC. They will unveil the car today in Aberdeen.

BOC global director for hydrogen energy John Carolin said: "The BOC GH2OST is a prototype for all cars of the future."
