Betavoltaics is an alternative energy technology that promises vastly extended battery life and power density over current technologies. Whether betavoltaics will replace current battery technologies altogether remains to be seen. Recent developments however, are promising. The following is meant to provide a basic introduction to betavoltaics in general and the current state of the art in betavoltaic technology.

LitroEnergy Power Cells Produce Continuous Output - By combining a non-stop luminescing technology that has a 20-year duration (12-year half-life), with thin film photovoltaics in a layered arrangement, MPK Co. has devised a portable, continuous generator that could change the planet. (PESN; Oct. 22, 2008)
Systems
- Resonant Nuclear Reactor that uses U-238 - Not "free" energy since it uses U-238 as the power source. It radiates, but simple lead shielding stops it just fine.
- 30 Year Continuous Power Laptop Battery? - Betavoltaic power cells are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source. As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling an electrical device like a laptop for years. (NextEnergyNews; Oct. 1, 2007) (Not so, says ZDNet)
- New Power Cell Works for Nearly 20 Years - University of Missouri-Columbia scientists say they've developed a power cell capable of providing continuous power for years, using betavoltaic power cells that use radioisotopes as the energy source. (PhysOrg; Oct. 11, 2005)
- The Atomic Battery - A breakthrough in betavoltaics could mean a 10-year battery life for low-power sensors and medical implants. (MIT Technology Review; June 16, 2005)
- Silicon solution could lead to a truly life-long battery - Using some of the same manufacturing techniques that produce microchips, researchers have created a porous-silicon diode that may lead to improved betavoltaics. Such devices convert low levels of radiation into electricity and can have useful lives spanning several decades. (PhysOrg; May 10, 2005)
- New 'Nuclear Battery' runs 10 years, 10 times more powerful - University of Rochester 3D capture design increases betavoltatics properties, bringing them closer to practical use. Technology is licensed to BetaBatt Inc. (PhysOrg; May 12, 2005)
- BetaVoltaic.com - Cell phone power system in development entails a betavoltaic cell stack to provide a constant trickle charge into an advanced Lithium-ion polymer battery cell. Next target: laptop computer power.
